Educational Development

d8The Dr. Betty ShabazzDelta Academy, a national sorority initiative, is a free program for middle school girls to help them succeed in the areas of math, science, and technology. Research reveals that during the middle school years, many girls will lose interest in math and science. This program is designed to show participants that math, science, and technology can be interestingly fun. The goal is to encourage the young ladies to pursue higher education and ultimately attain non-traditional careers as women.

Delta GEMS:Growing and Empowering Myself Successfully”
Delta GEMS is an outgrowth and extension initiative of the Dr. Betty Shabazz Delta Academy Program. The GEMS program was established to assist in facilitating the dreams and goals of at-risk, adolescent African-American girls, aged 14–18. Goals for Delta GEMS are: 1. To instill academic excellence; 2. To provide tools permitting the girls to sharpen and enhance their skills to achieve academic success; 3. To assist girls in setting and planning proper goals for their futures in high school and beyond; 4. To create compassionate, caring, and community minded young women by active involvement in community service opportunities.

EMBODI: Empowering Males to Build Opportunities for Developing Independence
The EMBODI program is designed to refocus the efforts of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., with the support and action of other major organizations, on the plight of African-American males. Both informal and empirical data suggests that the vast majority of African-American males continues to be in crisis and is not attaining its fullest potential educationally, socially and emotionally. EMBODI is constructed to address such issues through dialogue and recommendations for change and action.
